Ah-ha moment week 5

My week was crazy since the boys had vacation this week. But my ah-ha moments came this week at different times during their play. I realized that as much as I love taking pictures of my sons, they aren't the best subjects to use when trying to get more than 1 shot in the same place at the same time, like in our rule of thirds assignment. I also figured out that I tend to always center images and avoid background and depth in the shots I take. I also thought the framing would be much harder until I realized that there are tons of natural frames all around us.
One of the big things I had to keep reminding myself of was something that occurred to me last week after reading everyone else's blogs and seeing their pictures, I can stage pictures, it's not something I tend to do so while I tried to do more of it this week, it felt really unnatural, but I'm sure it will get better with time.''
As for my ah-ha moment about aesthetic, it was just getting a basic definition of what it means, it is basically the study of beauty and art, what is pleasing or appeals to people. I think this is such a huge thing, because we are all individuals and what we find beautiful is just as unique. I have this picture from the paper when Mother Teresa passed away that showed an up-close  view of her face, she wasn't classically beautiful by any means but her face had such character, I see that in a lot of the shots I have seen of Native Americans as well. I feel drawn to people that have seen hardship, and wear it in the lines of their faces.

  1. I agree that sometimes staging can be really successful. We think we have to be spontaneous, but spontaneous can be staged a bit too, I mean even though you tell your kids, stand here and do this, do they do it, no! So there ya go. My faves are in the play structure, the blue stairs behind your son and the red structure next to him, yowza, that's a winner. Also the ones in the netted climbing space, some of those are good. I love the peek-a-boo face and hands of the little son, how cute is that? It looks like you and your boys had a lot of fun staging and I look forward to more.

  2. Thanks Lisa, even though I've been fighting a chest cold all week we did have a nice vacation. We went to McDonald's after going to Sen. Leahy's office to discuss how important Head Start is, and actually made it on both channel 3 & 5 news that night. I have to say I enjoyed the play structure much more than being on the other side of the camera!
